“Mack” is now in our shoppe, rescued from a dry barn in South Carolina. Mack wins the barn-find of the month trophy, because Mack blows away most of the barn find cars we have seen over the years. This car is certainly a big project, a basket case in fact, it even comes with a wooden basket full of mechanical parts which have been removed from the car over the years. But the special thing about this car is the solid foundation, and the absence of major body rust. The car will need a new foot well floor pan on the driver’s side, and there are a few isolated small holes in the passenger floor pan. But unlike most of the project cars that have sat so long, this car has a really solid bottom perimeter, and smooth and straight rear deck and nose. It is extremely rare to find project cars that are so rust and rot-free.
Mack is a California car that still sports his 1963 California Black plates. He has been stored in a dry South Carolina barn since the 1980s, where the last owner kept it protected with the intention to one day restore it. He recently acknowledged that other projects are in the way, and has sold us the car so we can help find a new steward to bring this Sprite back to life.
If you like time capsules and love to find the best restoration candidates, I would give this car serious consideration. You’ll need to strip the entire car of paint and any surface rust, but underneath is a surprisingly solid foundation, that makes this car a great one to restore!
The original 948 engine and smoothcase transmission have been removed and placed in the cockpit for shipping. The car is missing seats and the windshield posts are broken. I can help the new owner source all parts for the car and as with all the cars we sell, we provide unlimited tech support for new owners. Please call 203 561 6929 if you would like more information about this “Barn find of the month.”
