NOW SOLD. Congratulations to Robert Herberg of Colorado for purchasing this beautiful car! Asa is our 282nd Bugeye sold.
Imagine the summer of ’63, when you could buy a three year-old Bugeye for $724 and only put down an initial deposit of ten bucks. That’s where this car started it’s life with the most recent owner who sold us the car this past month, after 57 years of ownership.
We call this car “ASA,” named after the long term steward of this car, who wants nothing more than the car to go to a good new home. This is AN5 35603 on the original bill of sale and the door tag is actually Chassis number AN5L 36221 (which is on the current title). (Incidentally, both numbers are correct). This 1960 Bugeye was originally Iris Blue and presumably delivered to California when new. Based on the amazing condition of the underside and original floor pans, it certainly seems this was a dry california car all of it’s life.
The car is extremely solid.
Asa found this car at San Jose Motors sitting in the lot in 1963, and called his mom to see if he could use his college money for the car. He had chosen a state school that was free for California residents, so the money was available, and once he pulled the trigger, he was hooked for most of his life.
The car spent much of its life in the San Jose area, first taking Asa back and forth to College in the 60s, and then to and from Vacaville 90 miles, where he helped a friend who was planting a vineyard.
In the 70s, he started riding his new Yamaha everywhere, and the car sat for a while, and then in the 90s, he had the car freshened for a cross country drive to Pennsylvania where he had relocated. The car sat for another bunch of years in PA, and then in 2017, the car enjoyed a nearly $14,000 mechanical restoration (see the receipts in the photo album). In the end, Asa decided to let the car go to a good home, and if you like this sort of car, don’t miss this opportunity to own a solid Bugeye that has enjoyed a recent massive cash infusion. The car has some nicks and scratches, but it is surprisingly solid, without the usual rust issues you would usually find on such a car.
The car runs and drives nicely (courtesy of the massive service done three years ago). Give a call if you want a sold it Bugeye at a very reasonable price!
